But first, a little back story…

There I lay, curled up in a ball on my sister’s couch. My husband had sent me there because he didn’t know what else to do.

I was hurting deeply and I didn’t have the will to even feed myself. My sister had given me a gentle command to get up and eat before she left for work that morning. But I had no interest in food.

In fact, I had no interest in even getting off the couch and doing anything.

I had just lost a child through a failed adoption. He was in my arms for two glorious weeks, and then…

Why, God, would you tease me like that? After years of trying and failing, we had finally agreed to pursue adoption, and then…this? 

I had decided I wasn’t going to talk with God anymore. What was the point? If this was how He was going to treat me after following Him all my life, then it wasn’t worth it.

But something deep inside me nudged me off of that couch and out the door. That same “something” drew me down the short path to the vast, ominous ocean that was just a few hundred yards from my sister’s house.

And as I sat on that beach, listening to the thunderous waves, I broke.

I had never before felt God’s presence so strongly as I did at that moment. It was as if the winds blowing across the ocean wrapped their force around me in an embrace. And the thunderous waves seemingly began to whisper to my hurting soul, “I am right here. I am with you. I’m hurting with you and I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

And as the waves rose and fell, I felt God’s love take my deepest hurts away.

I felt His deep compassion comfort my aching heart. And I heard Him, in my spirit, remind me that He measures all trials before they come to us. He reminded me that He was right there, holding my hand in my grief, and though I didn’t yet know the reason why, He trusted me to handle this great disappointment and still believe in Him.

That experience was over 17 years and two more children ago. And yet, this experience with God still moves my heart to levels of deep gratitude. It was this lesson—to trust God’s heart when I couldn’t understand His ways—that has brought me through many more hard trials over the years.

If we can learn to develop complete dependence on God in the good times, it will carry us through the difficult times. 

Maybe we will have seasons of drought—times when our household income is much less than the amount of our bills. Or your seasoned business is experiencing a steep decline and you don’t know how you’ll meet your financial obligations this month.

When those times come, pause for a moment, close your eyes, and remind yourself that God is there. Tell yourself that He’s right there with you, and He cares about every detail of your life. Even if you feel alone, that He doesn’t hear your prayers anymore, or that He’s left you altogether, don’t trust those feelings.

In Matthew 27:45-50, Jesus, Himself, felt forsaken. While hanging on the cross, bearing the shame of our sins, He had to depend on the relationship He had developed with His Father throughout His life. 

His complete dependence on the Father during the good times prepared Him for the worst times. Jesus trusted, even when all around Him the circumstances cried out for Him to doubt. 

He didn’t give up.

He relied on the evidence He had previously received of the Father’s acceptance and He was victorious.

This is the type of faith we need, mamas. If you’ve done the work to overcome self-doubt and start your business, you’ve prayed about the best side hustle to start, and God led you to start your home business, then you have to trust He will carry you through even when your current reality says different.
